Sustainable biofuel feedstock
Sustainable biofuel feedstock
- Jatropha curcas has been identified as a promising energy crop with good quality oil and lower processing cost compared to other feedstocks. The plant has higher seed oil content and better adaptability to drought stress and degraded land.
- Land use: Jatropha can be grown on sub-optimal land, such as semi-arid areas, and can be intercropped with other plants.
- Water requirements: Jatropha requires less water compared to most other oilseed plants.
- Climate tolerance: Jatropha can tolerate harsh climate conditions and low precipitation levels.
- Pest and disease resistance: Jatropha is naturally resistant to many pests and diseases, and hence requires minimal energy input for pest control.
- Oil yield: Jatropha seeds contain up to 40% oil by weight.
- By-products: Processing jatropha seeds into biodiesel produces by-products such as glycerine and residual seedcake, which can be used as industrial feedstock and organic fertilizer.
- Emissions: Burning Jatropha oil-based fuel emits fewer pollutants compared to fossil-based fuels
What we do
JATROPOWER produces superior quality jatropha seeds for plantation purpose through selection and breeding.
– JATROPOWER processes one of the most diverse jatropha genotype collections.
– We developed genetic tools for marker assisted selection and a scalable F1 Hybrid seed production – a first of a kind for jatropha.
– We develop robust techniques for jatropha seed processing and oil extraction.
